A maintenance program is vital in a screen printing production facility. You must maintain your equipment on a regular basis just as you would maintain your vehicle. You need to clean each department in your shop to minimize the amount of contaminants that can/will affect your screen printing process. In regards to a screen, one of its worst enemies is dust/dirt on an otherwise perfectly clean reclaimed screen.
There are several variables that will quickly increase the amount of contaminants (dust, dirt, etc.…) floating within your shop, such as having fans on the production floor and in the screenroom. With the warmer weather fast approaching, we will open our windows and doors to create a better air flow through each department. This is mostly unavoidable do to the fact that most facilities are not air conditioned.
What we can do is implement a cleaning process into our work week to minimize (maybe an after hour or weekend schedule) the amount of contaminants in the air. Also, be mindful of where you place fans in relation to your clean screens. Be sure to clean the fan blades and fan cage often, they will build up dust quickly.
Try a water-based adhesive (like Tex-Tac pallet adhesive) in place of a spray adhesive to cut down on the amount of glue used on press. Water based adhesives are cleaner, cost effective, and an environmentally safer product for your staff.
Mopping your floors on a regular basis will significantly cut down the amount of dirt blown around in a room. If you are using film to expose your screens be sure to place the films back in their folder ASAP to minimize the amount of exposure to contaminants, scratches, etc.…
A clean shop and regular maintenance program will reduce the amount of screens that need to be re-exposed/re-burnt. The cost of any maintenance program will be less expensive than the press downtime due to an unusable screen.
